Individual and Couples Counselling

Meet Laura Elliot, MSW, RSW

I am an individual and couples therapist in private practice with offices in Toronto and Mississauga. I am a Registered Social Worker and a member in good standing with the College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers as well as the Ontario Association of Social Workers.

Within my private practice I work with people who seek assistance with a wide variety of issues such as

  • Marriage issues like infidelity (affairs), loss of interest, in-laws and emotional distance
  • Trauma issues such as the aftermath of childhood sexual abuse
  • Workplace issues and job loss
  • Personal issues such as low self esteem, body image, stress management and anxiety
  • Difficult emotions like depression, anger, sadness, isolation
  • Grief and loss – bereavement and complicated grief
  • Chronic illness and/or pain
  • Violence and dealing with anger and/or abusive relationships
  • Pre- and postpartum adjustment issues including miscarriage
  • Addictions

I graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts in Crime and Deviance (I have always had a fascination with people and the human condition); a BA in Social Work from McMaster University and a Masters in Social Work with a specialization in Mental Health – also from U of T.

I have training and experience in Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Narrative and Art Therapy.  At times, I use stress reduction techniques such as breathing, mindfulness, guided imagery and progressive muscle relaxation to counter anxiety and excessive worry.

I have extensive training and experience working as a crisis counselor, helping people who are in distress and looking for help dealing with overwhelming, unbearable feelings and/or suicidality.

I have worked at the Children’s Aid Society. I understand the challenges and stress associated with parenting, as well as the impact of abuse, neglect and foster care on children.

I augment my private practice therapy and counseling by working at the Women’s Health Centre, a trauma centre. Here, I have the privilege of working with

  • Survivors of childhood sexual abuse, incest, rape and abusive relationships
  • Refugees who have fled countries because of war atrocities and torture
  • Individuals struggling to meet their basic needs

At the Women’s Health Centre I also co-facilitate the Relaxation Group, helping people learn mindfulness, and relaxation techniques such as breathing, progressive muscle relaxation and guided imagery.
